It’s not for everyone — and that’s the point.

Fall is the last clean break before the holidays.

Between back-to-school and Thanksgiving, the family runs flat. Mornings get earlier, evenings get later, weekends fill with sports schedules and birthday parties. By November, everyone is depleted and the holiday stretch is just beginning.

You need a real reset — not another long weekend that turns into work-from-vacation.

Kids need other kids.
Parents need room to breathe.

Four nights in a small cabin village on Chincoteague. Kids have built-in playmates, outdoor freedom, and optional activities. Parents get a slower fall weekend with less planning — and come home ready for the holiday stretch instead of dreading it.

Dave and Mary, Camp Somatic hosts

We’re Dave & Mary. Years of road trips taught us that cabin resorts naturally slow families down and help everyone reconnect — with kids, with each other, and with other families. Nature softens everything, and kids thrive in these environments.

We designed the trip we wanted to take with our own family. Now we host it for others.

We’re on-site the entire trip. The activities engage all ages, yet are optional. The pace is intentionally slow. The families who come tend to come back.

How it works.

  1. Get the details. We’ll send the sample schedule, cabin details, what’s included, pricing, and answers to the questions most parents ask before reserving.
  2. Talk it through or invite another family. Dave or Mary can help you decide if the trip is right for your family. We’ll also give you an easy way to share it with friends.
  3. Lock in your cabin on a 15-minute call. We’ll walk you through dates, payment, and cancellation terms. Then arrive to starter groceries, a relaxed rhythm, optional activities, and built-in community.

Kayaking on the Chincoteague bay

Hosted, not overscheduled.

Four nights of fall island time, with just enough structure to make the trip easy.

  • Welcome pizza & sunset hang (Thursday)
  • Morning coffee, 8–10 AM each day
  • Morning yoga (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
  • Kayaking from the dock
  • Kickball, s’mores, family fire (Friday)
  • Tacos & ice cream + sunset DJ on the rooftop (Saturday)
  • Beach visit and lighthouse-bike loop (Sunday)
  • Farewell catered dinner (Sunday)

Every activity is optional.

Built-in freedom, not drop-off childcare.

Camp Somatic is a hosted family vacation, not a kids’ camp or childcare program. Parents remain responsible for their own children throughout the trip. Dave and Mary organize the rhythm, gather families for optional activities, and create a setting where kids can play, explore, and build independence as trust naturally grows.

Offsite activities, beach outings, boat rides, and water activities require parent supervision.

Chincoteague in October — quieter, comfortable, and full of wildlife.

Chincoteague offers families a calmer fall escape on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

You get waterfront cabins on a quiet island. Wild ponies graze just across the channel on Assateague. The peak summer crowds are gone, the weather is comfortable (highs in the upper 60s to low 70s, evenings in the 50s), and the wildlife refuge fills with migrating waterfowl. It’s the coastal feel without the summer hustle.

FAQ

What ages is this best for?

Camp Somatic is best for families with kids ages 4–15.

Are kids supervised?

Camp Somatic is not drop-off childcare. Parents remain responsible for their own children. Dave and Mary organize the trip and create a family-friendly setting where kids can play, explore, and build independence.

Are activities required?

No. Every activity is optional. Families find ways to be creative with their day, without the mental work. The optional activities are additive to an obvious slate of options out your front door.

What’s in the starter groceries?

Coffee, filters, sugar, milk or nondairy alternative, eggs, bread, cooking oil, salt, pepper, and a s’mores kit.

Do families do a lot of cooking?

No. With restaurants nearby, people tend to opt for ease. And we’re offering a frozen meal upgrade option, so you’ll have a pre-stocked freezer with meals to use throughout your stay.

Can two families share one cabin?

We don’t recommend it. With two bedrooms, each cabin is best suited for one family. The community happens outside the cabins through shared activities, meals, campfires, and kid-led play.

What time is check-in?

Check-in is Thursday Oct 8 at 3 PM. Monday checkout is 11 AM.

What happens after I request details?

You’ll receive the sample schedule, cabin details, what’s included, payment information, and answers to common parent questions. Dave or Mary can also follow up to help you decide if it’s a fit.

Why Chincoteague in October?

October is the sweet spot — summer crowds gone, fall colors arriving, comfortable weather (highs in the upper 60s to low 70s, evenings in the 50s), and the wildlife refuge fills with migrating waterfowl. You get Chincoteague at its most authentic.

Can we invite another family?

Yes. Camp Somatic works especially well when families invite friends. We can send you a simple invite to forward or help coordinate nearby cabins if available.
